The Centre of Molecular and Macromolecular Studies in Łódź belongs to the network of the Polish Academy of Sciences institutes created to conduct research in selected areas of science.

The research carried out in the Centre covers the range of problems from the area of organic chemistry, bioorganic chemistry and polymer chemistry and physics, with special emphasis on developing methods of making advanced materials, both in the field of low molecular weight and high molecular weight products.

This includes new methods of stereoselective synthesis of complex organic molecules containing heteroatoms such as phosphorus, sulfur and silicon, new methods of stereocontrolled synthesis of modified oligonucleotides and their application in protein bioengineering as well as developing new approaches to synthetic polymers and their applications as biomaterials, materials for electronics or advanced construction materials.

Location

Łódź is the third largest Polish city (more than 800.000 inhabitants) located in the geographical centre of Poland, about 130 km South-West of Warsaw. There is an international airport in Łódź. A direct coach service connects Łódź with Warsaw International Airport.

The Łódź area has been an important centre of the chemical and textile industry in Poland for the last century. After the Second World War it has also developed into one of the most important academic centres in Poland, hosting the University of Łódź, the Technical University of Łódź, the Medical University and a few more specialized educational institutions at the university level, including a world renowned Academy of Movie-Making.

There is a rich cultural life in the city. The Opera House in Łódź is ranked as one of the best in Poland. There are also several theatres and museums including the interesting Museum of Contemporary Art and the Textile Industry Museum.

The Centre of Molecular and Macromolecular Studies is located in the downtown area, occupying three buildings at 112 Sienkiewicza Street.

History

The Centre of Molecular and Macromolecular Studies was created in 1972 on the basis of two research groups headed by the members of the Polish Academy of Sciences: Professor Jan Michalski (heteroorganic chemistry) and Professor Marian Kryszewski (polymer science). Professor Jan Michalski, until his retirement in 1991, was the Director of the Centre. He was succeeded by the Professor Marian Mikołajczyk, who headed the Centre till the end of 2007. Currently, the chair of Director of the Centre holds Professor Stanisław Słomkowski.

Within above 30 years of its existence, the Centre has developed from a relatively small laboratory into a fully grown research institute, employing about 180 people, of which over 150 are directly involved in research.
